Best 5 Summer Fragrances for Men
Hugo Boss Bottled Tonic
The collection of Boss Bottled fragrances from the house of Hugo Boss started with the original in 1998. Following the flankers like Boss Bottled Night from 2010, Boss Bottled Sport from 2012, Boss Bottled Unlimited from 2014, and Boss Bottled Intense from 2015, etc., comes the new, fresh, day-time edition Boss Bottled Tonic in the spring of 2017, intended for “modern men who aspire to success.”
Boss Bottled Tonic, refreshing and not too intense, is described as an ideal scent for work and for everyday occasions. It contains notes of grapefruit, bitter orange, lemon and apple that provide zestiness at the top, with the spicy heart of ginger and cinnamon. The signature woody base of the fragrance line features a vetiver accord, described as dry, earthy and elegant.
We reckon that many guys will have owned a Hugo Boss fragrance at some point, and this eau de toilette may just tempt you back to the collection. The fresh, zingy scent is something you can whack on at any time in the day, or have rolling around in rucksack for when it’s needed. Its enjoyable citrus, grapefruit and apple fragrance blends away to reveal ginger and cloves. It’s long-lasting, too, at around seven hours, and as it matures it only smells better. It will certainly work as the base cologne for the day before you move onto something more extravagant at night.
Tom Ford Sole di Positano
It would have been very tricky to put together a fragrance list without including something from Tom Ford. The designer, director, screenwriter and master of fragrances seemingly can do no wrong in the latter category – if you’ve picked up a style magazine in the last few years, chances are you’ll have read about the quality and overall wearability of his perfumes.
This latest offering is a delicious addition to the Neroli Portofino collection. Presented in a bright green bottle, matching its cousins in shape, this summery spray offers up bitter orange, lemons and jasmine. Connoisseurs will pick up on the notes of ylang-ylang and sandalwood. As with most of the Tom Ford collection, the spray lasts a long time on the skin, which is a blessing as it’s one of the more expensive fragrances on the list. This is a true summer bloomer, something for special occasions rather than your day-to-day wear – unless you’re an extravagant soul.
Sole di Positano, with its citrusy and floral tones, allegedly encompasses the beauty of this dreamy location and the Italian coast. Its top notes include citrus fruits such as Calabrian bergamot, bitter orange, mandarin and lemon. The Mediterranean idyll and sunny atmosphere is captured in the heart of the perfume with notes of shiso leaf, orange blossom, ylang-ylang, jasmine, lily of the valley and neroli. The base ends with a dose of green moss.
Nuit d’Issey Issey Miyake
Nuit d’Issey is a new men’s fragrance from Issey Miyake, which, judging by the design of the bottle, belongs to the same collection as L’Eau d’Issey Pour Homme from 2009.
The bottle is colored in black to represent the night, magnetic and hypnotic, the main inspiration for this edition.
The composition is a woody-spicy with a leather backbone, developed by Dominique Ropion and Loc Dong. It is also described as a sharp, crisp and mysterious ode to wood.
Top notes include zesty citruses of bergamot and grapefruit. The heart of the mysterious trail of leather accords is enhanced with spices, black pepper, woods and vetiver.
The base notes are rich dark woods, patchouli and incense with tonka bean.
Fresh Cannabis Santal
This classic scent for men is a sensual, masculine blend of rich fruits like kumquat and dark plum mingled with patchouli, magnolia, chocolate, vetiver, and vanilla musk. It’s a memorable scent that leaves a lasting impression.
Cannabis Santal by Fresh is a Woody Floral Musk fragrance for men. Cannabis Santal was launched in 2006. The nose behind this fragrance is Caroline Sabas.
Top notes are brazilian orange, plum and bergamot; middle notes are patchouli, rose and cannabis; base notes are musk, dark chocolate, vetiver and vanilla.
This is well-blended woody patchouli with a fresh, camphorous opening and a creamy woody drydown. On the dry down you have a very nice sweet patchouli/chocolate scent. Great fragrance and a great price.
Safari by Ralph Lauren
Safari for Men by Ralph Lauren is a Woody Aromatic fragrance for men. It was launched in 1992. Top notes are aldehydes, artemisia, coriander, lavender, green notes, neroli, bergamot and lemon; middle notes are cyclamen, carnation, cinnamon, tarragon, jasmine and rose; base notes are leather, sandalwood, amber, patchouli, musk, oakmoss and cedar.
This exotic medley of warm woods and sparkling citrus notes is gently warmed with the essences of lavender, clove, and vetiver.
The bergamot and lemon notes stand out early, mixing with eucalyptus and/or a synthetic mint/green note that gives Safari a rather herbal citric feel. The middle notes are mostly common spice garden varieties with a touch of floral, with the basil, geranium, thyme and especially the cinnamon blending well with the top to create a rather classic and well-worn familiarity accentuated by the slightest touch of feminine floral to give Safari a higher range than usual for its time.
The dry down is a standard Polo trademark, the cedarwood, oak moss, patchouli, sandalwood, leather and vetiver allow for the floral and herbal middle notes to stretch out and live deep into the dry down.
Longevity is outstanding, with 8-12 hours the norm and 14 not inconceivable on some. Projection is also fantastic, with 6+ hours the norm before it turns a bit toward a skin scent. A showpiece in any collection that is a bit harder to find than the other Polo releases, but is well worth the effort looking for it.
